Cave WIP

About to wrap this one up, but I still feel like it's missing something to really polish it to a finish, I'm not sure what it is, but if you guys have any suggestions that would be awesome!

Have a great weekend everyone!

  1. My first reaction was, out loud, "holy shit."

I think this piece's strongest point is that monster hand, it's friggin' gorgeous. The overall composition is quite well done too, but I think there's a lot of things that can be done quite easily to improve this piece.

First of all, my eyes want to go to the kick ass monster hand, but they keep wandering. The upper right corner is extremely distracting, but virtually everything else has the same value range, so in terms of contrast there's no clear focal point. In general, I think a lot of the rocky areas can stand to be darker (especially the upper right corner). On top of that, it may not make that much sense from a lighting standpoint, but I think you should make the rocks under the monster hand darker as well, just to make the hand pop out more.

That hand is, as Shaddy Safadi says with unsettling enthusiasm, the JUICE in this painting. Do everything you can to give it the center stage. Part of me would kind of want to experiment with the direction of the rocks around the cavern, maybe playing with having the more jagged bits point in towards the cave, and the monster (and his juicy hand).

To be honest, i'm not really feeling the figure though. I mean, he doesn't feel like he's that important, and his design and pose feel stiff and strange to me. The billowing cloak is also very stiff, so it's kind of detrimental because we know that a cape/cloak should be very fluid and gestural. Since I know he exists for the narrative aspect of the painting, and therefore is integral, I would suggest redoing that part. If he wasn't that important, I would be inclined to just remove him entirely, but that's probably not an option.

But man, I really like this piece. It looks like it has SO much potential, and could carry a really simple but poignant narrative. Keep pushing it David!
